Rainy Season and Dengue Fever: Why Mosquitoes Thrive After Heavy Rain

Southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands, by contrast, have a longer rainy season running from May through November, so risk spreads out over a wider window rather than concentrating into one short burst.

Local habits shape this picture too. In many rural areas of the Mekong Delta, storing rainwater in jars, cisterns, and concrete tanks for household use is a long-standing practice — but left uncovered, these containers become ideal breeding sites throughout the rainy season. In cities, unfinished construction sites, water pooling on rooftops, and scrapyards full of old tires and bottles serve the same purpose in a different form.

Recognizing the warning signs early

Dengue typically starts with a sudden high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle aches, and sometimes a skin rash. Most cases resolve within about a week with rest, fluids, and proper fever management. However, watch closely for warning signs of a more severe course: severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums or nosebleeds, extreme fatigue, or cold hands and feet.
