Northern Vietnam's Damp Season: Why Houses "Sweat" and How to Deal With It
What makes a house "sweat"?
Every year in late winter and early spring, homes across northern Vietnam go through a strange spell: tiled floors turn slick with water nobody spilled, walls glisten, mirrors fog over, and laundry refuses to dry for days on end. Locals call it "nồm" — the damp season — and while it can feel almost supernatural, the physics behind it is simple. It all comes down to the dew point: the temperature at which the water vapor in the air condenses into liquid water.
Warm air can hold far more moisture than cold air. When very humid air touches a surface colder than its dew point, the thin layer of air against that surface cools below the threshold and its moisture condenses right there. Think of a glass of iced water on a summer afternoon: the cold glass makes the vapor around it bead up into droplets that run down the sides.
During a nồm spell, relative humidity regularly climbs above 90 percent, so the dew point sits barely below the actual air temperature. Meanwhile, tiled floors, concrete walls, and metal fixtures are still holding the chill of earlier cold snaps — building materials warm up slowly. A surface just a couple of degrees colder than the dew point is enough to coat itself in a film of water, and the whole house quite literally sweats.
Why late winter and early spring?
Nồm needs two ingredients at once: very humid air and cold surfaces. From roughly February to April, both line up. As cold surges from the north weaken, winds swing around to the southeast and pull warm, moisture-laden air in from the sea. At the same time, floors, foundations, and walls are still storing the cold they absorbed all winter, lagging well behind the warming air.
The effect is strongest across the Red River Delta, including Hanoi, and in coastal provinces such as Quang Ninh that meet the humid sea breeze first. Each spell typically lasts from a few days to about a week, alternating with drier cold snaps — which is why a house can be bone dry one week and dripping the next throughout the season.
The damage it quietly does
Beyond the discomfort, persistent damp works on your home in several ways:
- Mold takes over: high humidity is ideal for mold on walls, ceilings, clothes, leather shoes, books, and wooden furniture — and mold releases spores into the air you breathe.
- Electronics suffer: moisture condensing on circuit boards causes glitches and corrodes solder joints, shortening the life of TVs, computers, and cameras, especially devices left unplugged for long stretches.
- Health takes a hit: damp air loaded with mold spores aggravates respiratory conditions, allergies, and asthma; older people often feel more joint pain, and slippery floors raise the risk of falls.
- Food spoils faster: dried goods, cereals, and snacks absorb moisture quickly and turn stale or moldy unless sealed tightly.
The right way to fight it: seal the house, dry the air
The core principle is short: keep humid outdoor air out, and pull water vapor out of the indoor air. In practice:
- Keep windows and doors closed, especially those facing south and southeast, where the moist wind comes from. Stuff a towel under large door gaps or fit weather strips.
- Run a dehumidifier — by far the most effective tool. Holding indoor humidity around 50–60 percent lets floors dry out and stops mold in its tracks. Close the room while it runs, or you will be dehumidifying the whole neighborhood.
- Use the air conditioner's dry mode if you don't own a dehumidifier. Cooling also strips moisture from the air, though it uses more power and chills the room.
- Mop only with a wrung-out or dry cloth, ideally microfiber, and follow up immediately with a dry towel. Never push a dripping mop around.
- Protect electronics by powering devices on regularly so their own warmth dries the internals; store cameras and lenses in dry boxes with desiccant packs.
- Dry clothes and bedding completely before storing them, and keep moisture absorbers or charcoal pouches in wardrobes.
Mistakes that make it worse
Several instincts that serve you well the rest of the year backfire during nồm:
- Opening windows "for fresh air" is the classic error. Every draft brings in more humid air, which promptly condenses on your cold floor. The wetter the house, the more tightly it should be shut.
- Mopping with plenty of water just adds more liquid to evaporate and re-condense elsewhere.
- Pointing a fan at the floor all day dries one spot while the moisture stays in the room and settles on the next cold surface. Fans only help when paired with a dehumidifier.
- Drying laundry indoors without dehumidifying releases what amounts to a basin of water straight into your living space.
When does it end?
A nồm spell breaks when one of its two ingredients disappears. Most often, a dry cold surge arrives: the wind flips to the northeast, humidity drops sharply, and the house dries within hours — that is the moment to throw the windows open, air everything out, and wash what needs washing. Otherwise, the damp fades for good in late spring, once sustained warmth lifts floors and walls above the dew point until the next cold season.
Because nồm comes and goes with each shift of the wind, the smartest defense is simply watching the forecast: humidity heading above 85–90 percent with southeasterly winds means close up and switch on the dehumidifier early, while news of a dry northeast monsoon means it is time to ventilate.
