Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, lies deep in Central Asia at the foot of the Kopet Dag mountains on the edge of the Karakum Desert, giving it a cold desert climate (Köppen BWk). Summers (June–August) are extremely hot and dry, typically 35–42°C and sometimes above 45°C under near-cloudless skies. Winters (December–February) turn cold, with frost, occasional sub-zero nights and chilly winds off the steppe. Spring (March–May) is the mildest and dampest season with a little rain, while autumn (September–November) is dry and gradually cooling. Dust storms occur from time to time.
