Athens's Climate

Athens lies in a mountain-ringed basin in southern Greece and has a hot Mediterranean climate with long, dry, sweltering summers. Summers (June–September) are intensely sunny with highs typically 30–35°C and heatwaves that can exceed 40°C, bringing almost no rain, while winters (December–February) are mild at 10–15°C and form the main rainy season, sometimes with strong winds. In high summer the northerly Meltemi wind helps temper the heat along the coast.

Frequently asked questions

How hot does Athens get in summer?

Very hot. July and August daytime highs are usually 33–35°C, and heatwaves can push temperatures above 40°C. The city basin traps heat, keeping nights sultry too.

When is the rainy season in Athens?

Rain concentrates from November to March, with December and January the wettest. Total rainfall is fairly low and summers are almost completely dry.

What is the Meltemi wind?

The Meltemi is a dry, strong northerly wind that sweeps across the Aegean in midsummer (July–August), cooling Athens and the islands and cutting humidity, though it can whip up rough seas.

When is the best time to visit Athens?

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal, with comfortably warm weather, little rain and relief from the fierce midsummer heat.
