Kigali's Climate

Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, sits near the centre of the country just south of the equator on a highland plateau at around 1,500 m. Its altitude gives it a mild tropical highland climate that stays pleasant all year, with warm days and cool nights and daytime highs typically 25–28°C in every month. Rather than hot and cold seasons, Kigali's year is defined by rainfall: two rainy seasons (roughly March–May and October–November) alternate with two drier spells (June–September and December–February). Rain usually arrives as short afternoon downpours.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Kigali?

The two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, are best: dry, sunny and with little rain, ideal for getting around and sightseeing.

Is Kigali hot, and which months are warmest?

Thanks to its altitude Kigali stays mild all year with no truly hot months; the warmest is around August–September, with daytime highs near 27–28°C.

When are the rainy seasons in Kigali?

There are two: a long rains from March to May and shorter rains from October to November, mostly falling as afternoon showers.

Are nights cold in Kigali?

Nights are fairly cool because of the elevation, often dropping to 14–16°C, so a light jacket is handy, especially during the dry season.
