Montevideo's Climate
Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, sits on the northern shore of the Río de la Plata estuary in the Southern Hemisphere and has a mild humid subtropical climate moderated by the sea, so extremes are rare. Because it lies south of the equator, the seasons are reversed: summers (December–February) are warm, typically 20–29°C with some sticky days, while winters (June–August) are cool and damp, hovering around 6–14°C with rare frost. Rainfall is fairly even year-round, and strong winds off the ocean and estuary are a defining feature, sometimes accompanied by the cold pampero blowing up from the south.
