Niamey, the capital of Niger, sits on the Niger River in the inland Sahel of West Africa and has a hot semi-arid climate (BSh) with heat almost year-round. There are two main seasons: a long dry season (October–May) of intense sun and low humidity, with dusty harmattan winds blowing off the Sahara from about November to February and hazing the sky; and a short rainy season (June–September) when the West African monsoon brings showers and thunderstorms and a little relief.
