Nouakchott is the capital of Mauritania, set on the Atlantic coast at the western edge of the Sahara, with a hot desert climate that stays dry almost all year. The cold Canary Current and sea breezes keep the coast milder than the interior: the hot season (May–October) usually runs 32–38°C, occasionally above 40°C when desert winds reach the city, while the cooler months (December–February) sit around 20–28°C.
