Ouagadougou is the capital of Burkina Faso, set well inland in the Sahel of West Africa, along the transition between the Sahara and the savanna. It has a hot semi-arid climate that stays sunny and hot for most of the year, with two main seasons. The dry season lasts from October to April, when the dry harmattan wind carries Saharan dust that hazes the sky and parches the air; the peak heat comes in March–May with daytime highs usually of 38–42°C. A short but intense rainy season runs from June to September, bringing showers and thunderstorms, with most of the year's rain falling in July and August.
