Atmospheric Pressure: The Forecast Number Almost Nobody Reads
Most of us open a weather app, glance at the temperature and the chance of rain, and put the phone away. Just underneath those headline figures sits a quiet little line: 1008 hPa, 1015 hPa. Almost nobody reads it. Yet that number is what decides which way the wind blows, where clouds pile up, and why a calm afternoon suddenly turns nasty.
What the number actually measures
The atmosphere is light, but it is tens of kilometres deep, and the whole column of air above presses down on everything below. At sea level, the air above a single square metre of ground weighs roughly 10 tonnes. We do not feel crushed because the pressure inside our bodies balances the pressure outside.
The usual unit is the hectopascal (hPa), exactly the same size as the older millibar: 1 hPa = 1 mb. Standard sea-level pressure is 1013.25 hPa. In real life it spends most of its time between about 990 and 1030 hPa; a strong winter high can push past 1030, while the centre of a powerful typhoon drops well below 950.
One thing trips people up: pressure falls fast with altitude, about 1 hPa for every 8 metres near the surface. That is why forecasts convert readings to sea level, so stations at different elevations can be compared. If your phone reads 950 hPa up in the hills, that is local pressure, not a storm warning.
Highs and lows, the two characters in every forecast
Picture the atmosphere as a lumpy blanket: thick spots are highs, dips are lows. Air always flows from high toward low, and that flow is what we call wind.
- High pressure: air sinks, compresses and warms, so clouds struggle to form and skies stay clear. In Vietnam's winter, a continental high sliding south brings the northeast monsoon, dry air and a sharp chill; in summer, the subtropical high pushing west locks in long heatwaves.
- Low pressure: air converges and rises, cools, and its moisture condenses into cloud and rain. Troughs, lows, tropical depressions and typhoons all sit on the same scale at different intensities.
- The spacing of isobars on a chart tells you the wind: the closer the lines, the steeper the pressure change over distance, and the harder it blows.
Because the Earth spins, wind does not run straight into a low. In the Northern Hemisphere it spirals counterclockwise around a low and clockwise around a high, which is why satellite images of a typhoon show that unmistakable pinwheel.
Why a fast-falling barometer is bad news
What matters is not the absolute reading but the trend. A place parked at 1005 hPa all week can still be sunny; but if pressure slides from 1012 to 1004 in half a day, a weather system is almost certainly heading your way.
A few rules of thumb worth memorising:
- A drop of 1 to 2 hPa in three hours: worth noticing, expect thickening cloud and freshening wind.
- A drop of more than 3 hPa in three hours: a strong, fast-moving system, time to make a plan.
- A slow, steady rise: conditions improving, cloud breaking up, wind easing.
- A jump of 5 to 10 hPa in a day during northern Vietnam's winter: usually cold air arriving, with temperature falling behind it.
One detail most people never hear about: pressure has its own daily rhythm, swinging roughly 1 to 3 hPa, strongest in the tropics. It peaks around 10am and 10pm and bottoms out around 4am and 4pm, so a gentle dip in the early afternoon is normal. Only a fall that clearly exceeds that rhythm deserves your attention.
With a tropical cyclone, pressure eases down as the outer bands arrive, then plunges as the centre closes in. If the wind suddenly dies while pressure bottoms out, you may be in the eye: it will return from the opposite direction within minutes to tens of minutes, the most dangerous moment of the storm. Coastal communities such as Quang Ninh and the central provinces should read pressure alongside the wind forecast.
Aching joints and headaches: is there anything to it?
There is a real basis, but it is often oversold. When outside pressure falls, the squeeze on soft tissue around a joint eases slightly; tissue expands a fraction and presses on nerve endings already sensitised by arthritis or joint wear. For migraine, several studies report a link between rapid pressure drops and headache frequency, probably involving blood vessels and the sinuses.
To be fair, though, the research is mixed and the average effect across a population is modest. A change in the weather is never just a change in pressure: temperature falls, humidity climbs, the light goes flat, we move less and sleep worse.
If you are one of the sensitive ones, a few habits help: keep a short diary to see whether flare-ups really line up with falling pressure, keep joints warm and moving before the weather turns, and push demanding tasks to a settled day.
How to read pressure in a forecast
- Open the detailed view for a day and look for the line in hPa. It is already converted to sea level.
- Never judge from a single figure. Scan the 24 to 48 hour sequence and ask one question: rising, falling, or flat?
- Read it together with wind and humidity. Falling pressure plus strengthening wind plus rising humidity is a reliable trio for rain.
- On a synoptic chart, H marks the centre of a high and L the centre of a low, and the closed loops around them are isobars.
- Comparing regions is interesting too: browse forecasts by province shows the north-south pressure gap widening most in winter.
Pressure is not a number you need to check as often as temperature, but learning to read its direction puts you a step ahead of the forecast itself. Next time you plan a beach trip or a day of outdoor work, check tomorrow's forecast and glance at the hPa line. It says things the temperature never will.
