Cloud Types and How to Read the Sky for Weather

Long before satellites, sailors and farmers had exactly one forecasting tool: they looked up. That habit was never superstition. Clouds are the atmosphere made visible — wherever one forms, moist air is being lifted, cooled and condensed into droplets. So a cloud's shape, and above all how fast it is changing, tells you something honest about the air above you.
Three decks, three personalities
Meteorologists sort clouds by the height of their base. In Vietnam's humid tropics, three groups cover most of what you see:
- Low clouds (below roughly 2 km): cumulus, the cotton-ball puffs; stratus, a flat grey sheet; stratocumulus, grey patches in rows. This deck brings drizzle, fog and that heavy, muggy feeling.
- Mid clouds (roughly 2–6 km): altocumulus, like a small flock of sheep; altostratus, a frosted-glass layer that turns the sun into a blurred smudge. Usually the opening act for widespread rain.
- High clouds (above roughly 6 km): cirrus, thin and feathery; cirrostratus, a veil that often shows itself only as a halo around the moon. Made of ice crystals, they rarely rain on you — but they are excellent early warning.
One type belongs to no single deck because it grows through all three: the cumulonimbus.
Cumulonimbus: the star of storm season
Every thunderstorm starts as an innocent cumulus. When the ground heats enough and the air is unstable, updrafts push the cloud taller than it is wide and its top turns lumpy, like a cauliflower. Once that top spreads into an anvil, the storm is mature: heavy showers, lightning, damaging gusts, occasionally hail.
Signs you can read by eye:
- The cloud base darkens and lowers, its edges unusually crisp.
- A sudden cool breeze while the sun is still out: that is the gust front, and rain usually follows within minutes.
- Count the seconds between flash and thunder: roughly three seconds per kilometre. Under thirty seconds means lightning within about ten kilometres, so get inside a solid building.
Cirrus: a message posted 12 to 24 hours ahead
If cumulonimbus talks about the next half hour, cirrus talks about tomorrow. The classic sequence: a clear sky, then feathery streaks from one side of the horizon, thickening into a cirrostratus veil with a halo, lowering into altostratus that dims the sun, and finally a thick grey layer delivering steady rain.
That progression — thickening and lowering — is the fingerprint of a large system moving in: a cold front, a trough, or the far outer edge of a tropical cyclone still hundreds of kilometres away. The signal is not the presence of cirrus but its trend hour by hour.
Folk weather signs: how much holds up?
Vietnamese weather proverbs are not fantasy, but they are not physical law either.
- "Ráng mỡ gà, ai có nhà phải chống" — a chicken-fat-yellow sky means brace your house. Near sunrise and sunset, sunlight crosses a deep slice of atmosphere, short wavelengths scatter away, and only red, orange and yellow reach the cloud deck above. When that deck is thickening cirrus running ahead of a strong system, the whole sky glows golden. Real mechanism; the hit rate depends on season and region.
- "Dragonflies flying low means rain." Ahead of rain, humidity rises and pressure falls. Thin-winged insects fly lower in heavy, moist air and dragonflies drop with their prey; a gust front pushes everything closer to the ground. Plausible physics, but the lead time is only tens of minutes.
- Ants carrying eggs uphill, termites swarming around lights share the same root: animals reacting to shifts in humidity and pressure.
The catch is that proverbs encode local statistics gathered over generations for one specific place. Move a saying from the Red River Delta to the Central Highlands and its accuracy drops noticeably.
Reading the sky by region
- The south and the Central Highlands in the wet season: sunny mornings, cumulus building through midday, storms blooming in the early afternoon and fading after sunset.
- The north in winter: low grey stratus, drizzle and poor visibility, sometimes unchanged for days.
- Highlands and mountains: cloud forms right on the windward slope, so one side pours while the other stays bright — which is why a province-level forecast beats judging from a single viewpoint.
Where eyeballs stop and models start
Naked-eye forecasting has hard limits. You see only the underside of the lowest layer; everything above is hidden. Your horizon is a few dozen kilometres, so warning time is short. And eyes cannot quantify: they will not say whether rain means 5 mm or 60 mm. At night you are essentially blind.
Numerical weather prediction covers that gap. It solves the equations of atmospheric motion on a three-dimensional grid, assimilates satellite, radar, radiosonde and surface data, then runs many scenarios to estimate probability. The payoff is real numbers for one to seven days ahead instead of a hunch about the next half hour. Its weakness is resolution: grid boxes stay coarse next to a storm cell a few kilometres across, so exact timing of this afternoon's downpour remains hard.
The smart approach combines both: use hourly and weekly forecasts for planning, and your eyes for the next one or two hours.
Quick field guide
- Small flat-based cumulus with blue between: settled for a few hours.
- Cumulus taller than it is wide, cauliflower top: storms likely in 30 to 90 minutes.
- Anvil top, dark base, sudden cool wind: take shelter now.
- Cirrus thickening and lowering, halo around the moon: widespread rain possible in 12 to 24 hours.
- Featureless grey stratus: persistent light rain, low risk but damp all day.
Spend a few minutes a day watching the sky and you will be surprised how often you call it right. Still, before heading out, check tomorrow's forecast for real numbers on rain, temperature and wind, then let your eyes handle the next hour or two.
