Storm Surge: The Deadliest Coastal Threat Few People Talk About
When a powerful typhoon heads for the coast, most attention goes to wind speed and rainfall. Yet for people living near the sea, the deadliest part of many storms is something far less talked about: storm surge — an abnormal rise of seawater that can sweep kilometres inland within hours. Understanding it is the first step to keeping your family safe.
What exactly is storm surge?
Storm surge is the rise of the sea above the normal predicted tide, produced by the storm itself. It is not the same as big waves: waves are oscillations on the surface, while surge is a huge mass of water pushed toward land, lifting the base water level along a long stretch of coastline at once. Storm waves then break on top of that raised base, pushing the total level beyond anything locals have seen. Surge rarely arrives as a dramatic wall of water; more often it looks like a tide rising many times faster than normal — a deceptively gradual sight that makes people underestimate it.
Two mechanisms: wind piling up water, low pressure lifting the sea
Two effects work together to drive the surge:
- Wind stress. Storm winds blowing across hundreds of kilometres of sea drag the surface water along. When that mass reaches a shallow coastal shelf it has nowhere to escape downward or sideways, so it piles up and pushes inland. This is the dominant contributor.
- The low-pressure "lift". Air pressure at a storm's centre is far lower than around it, so the sea surface beneath bulges upward — like liquid rising in a straw. Roughly, each hectopascal of pressure drop raises the sea by about a centimetre; the deeper the storm, the bigger the boost.
Add tide and waves on top and you get the real water level at landfall.
Why surge is deadlier than wind
Worldwide, most storm fatalities come from water, not wind, and coastal surge is a leading cause. Three reasons stand out:
- Water is heavy. A cubic metre weighs about a tonne. Knee-deep moving water can knock an adult off their feet; half a metre can float a car. With waves on top, surge can break walls and flatten light coastal houses.
- It peaks at the worst possible moment — around landfall, when winds are screaming and rain has cut visibility to nothing. The water can rise a metre or more within an hour or two, exactly when nobody can safely go outside.
- It cuts off escape routes. Strengthening wind gives you time to shelter, but surge floods coastal roads and low ground first. People who wait until they "see the water" often find the way out already submerged.
Long after landfall, lingering saltwater keeps damaging homes, wells, fields and ponds.
What makes a surge higher
The same storm can produce very different surge heights along the coast. Several factors make things much worse:
- Landfall at high tide: the surge stacks on top of the tidal peak — the most dangerous scenario; at low tide the same storm does far less harm.
- Shallow seabeds and funnel-shaped bays or estuaries: a shallow shelf stops water from draining into the depths, while narrowing coastlines concentrate the flow and push levels higher still.
- Strong, large, slow-moving storms: a stronger, wider wind field blowing longer over the sea shoves a bigger mass of water ashore.
- Angle of approach: a storm striking the coast head-on produces a higher surge than one sliding along it; in the Northern Hemisphere, the right-hand side of the track usually takes the highest water, where winds blow straight onshore.
Vietnam's coastline: where to stay alert
Vietnam sits in one of the world's most active typhoon regions, and nearly its entire coastline can face surge:
- The northern coast (Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh): a shallow, gently sloping seabed, large river mouths, and communities and fish ponds right at the waterline — ideal conditions for surge to reach far inland, especially at spring tide.
- The central coast from Thanh Hoa down to Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa: storms arrive in quick succession late in the year, and narrow plains full of lagoons, bays and estuaries put towns right at the water's edge.
- The southern coast: storms are rarer but not absent — very low-lying land criss-crossed by rivers lets seawater travel deep inland, while long storm-free stretches breed complacency.
If you live in these areas, follow the coastal city forecasts closely during storm season and watch for any bulletin mentioning expected surge height — a number that matters as much as the wind category.
The golden rule: evacuate early, and evacuate from water
Storm safety boils down to one memorable line: you hide from wind, but you run from water.
- Follow evacuation orders immediately, aiming to finish before the wind picks up; leaving late, through gusts and rising water, is far more dangerous than going a few hours early.
- Surge evacuation rarely means going far — usually just a few kilometres, from low coastal ground to higher land and solid buildings. Ask local authorities about your nearest shelter and safest route.
- Keep a go-bag ready: documents, medicines, drinking water, a torch and a power bank, so you can leave the moment the order comes, even at night.
- Do not return too soon: floodwater hides washed-out roads, open drains and fallen power lines; wait for the official all-clear.
- Never go to the shore to watch the waves when a storm is near — curiosity has cost many lives.
Storm surge is frightening because it is under-discussed, not because it is unavoidable. Know the mechanism, know whether your neighbourhood is exposed, respect early evacuation — and most of the mortal risk disappears.
