Damascus lies in southwestern Syria on a plateau at about 680 m, below the Anti-Lebanon mountains and on the edge of the Syrian desert, giving it a semi-arid climate with hot dry summers and cool damp winters. Summers (June–September) are hot and very dry, usually 33–37°C by day but with mild nights thanks to the altitude and arid air, while winters (December–February) are cool to cold, around 10–14°C by day with nights that can approach 0°C and occasional light snow. Rain is scarce and falls in the winter months from November to March, with summers essentially rainless. Spring and autumn are short and pleasant.
