Mukalla's Climate

Mukalla is a port city on the Arabian Sea in southern Yemen, along the Hadhramaut coast. It has a hot desert climate, sunny and scorching almost year-round with very little rainfall, yet its seaside setting keeps humidity high so it feels muggier than the thermometer suggests. Summers (May–September) are hot and humid, with daytime highs of 33–38°C and the southwest monsoon bringing moist air and occasional low cloud; winters (December–February) are warmer and more comfortable, around 26–29°C by day. Rain is rare and erratic, falling mostly in late summer.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Mukalla?

Winter from December to February is most comfortable: warm, around 26–29°C by day and far less muggy than the sweltering summer.

What are the hottest months in Mukalla?

June to August are hottest, usually 34–38°C, and the high humidity coming off the sea makes it feel even more stifling.

Does Mukalla get much rain?

Very little; this is an arid region with very low annual rainfall, with occasional sudden showers in late summer sometimes tied to storms.

How does the monsoon affect Mukalla?

In summer the southwest monsoon draws moist air and low cloud in from the Arabian Sea, raising humidity even though rainfall stays negligible.
