Phu Yen's Climate
Wedged between the Cu Mong and Ca passes, Phu Yen has the signature climate of Vietnam's south-central coast: sunshine most of the year, no real winter, and rain squeezed into a few intense months. Roughly 2,154 mm falls annually, but the calendar is lopsided — from September through January the province gets soaked, while from February to August the skies over Ganh Da Dia, Mui Dien lighthouse and the Tuy Hoa rice plain stay stubbornly blue.
The long dry season: calm seas from Xuan Dai to Vung Ro
After Tet the winds swing east and southeast and the sea flattens out. This is when Xuan Dai Bay, O Loan Lagoon, Hon Yen islet and Bai Mon beach below the lighthouse look their best, and boat trips to Nhat Tu Son or Ganh Da Dia's basalt columns run glassy-smooth. Heat peaks in June, when average highs on the Tuy Hoa plain reach 34.6°C; dry westerly winds funnelling down the Ba River valley can make afternoons feel furnace-like. The sun drives the local economy — the tuna fleet sails from Dong Tac, Song Cau's lobster rafts hit their busiest season, and the Tuyet Diem salt fields turn white.
The wet months: when the Ba River changes character
From September the northeast monsoon collides with tropical depressions and typhoons brewing offshore, dumping torrential rain on the eastern Truong Son slopes. November is the peak: 477 mm on average across roughly 27 rainy days — barely a dry day all month. The Ba River (the Da Rang in its lower reaches), with the Ky Lo and Ban Thach, rises fast; when upstream hydropower dams release floodwater, low-lying Tuy An, Dong Hoa and areas near Da Rang bridge can go under. Storm surge and heavy swell have badly eroded the Xom Ro seawall near the river mouth, and the Ca and Cu Mong passes turn foggy and slick — drive slowly.
A winter that never really arrives
February is the coolest month, yet nights only dip to about 21.4°C — enough for a light jacket at dawn, nothing more. For cooler air, locals head to the Van Hoa plateau at around 400 m, pineapple country of dewy grassy hills a few degrees cooler than the plain. That year-round warmth also keeps the double-cropped paddies of the lower Ba River — central Vietnam's biggest rice bowl — green almost without pause.
When to go and what to pack
March to August is prime beach weather: bring sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and plenty of water, and set out by 4 am for sunrise at Mui Dien. September to December means lower room rates but demands attention to storm bulletins — skip riverside camping and never drive across flooded causeways. January and February are mild with fading showers — moss season on the Xom Ro breakwater; go at low tide in the early morning and wear grippy shoes on the slippery rocks.
