On the edge of the Sahara, Cairo has a hot desert climate (BWh) with very little rain, amounting to little more than a few brief showers in winter. Summers (June–September) are scorching and dry, with daytime highs of 35–40°C that can top 42°C, while winters (December–February) are pleasantly mild at 9–20°C with cool nights. In spring, the hot, dusty khamsin wind blows in from the desert, bringing sandstorms that cut visibility and push air quality down.
