Set within the Sichuan Basin, Chengdu has a humid subtropical climate famous for cloudy skies, fog and little sunshine throughout the year. Summer from June to August is warm and humid with highs usually 28–32°C and the heaviest rainfall of the year, sometimes in prolonged downpours. Winters from December to February are damp and penetratingly cold, around 3–10°C, often shrouded in thick fog with snow rarely settling.
Sitting in the mountain-ringed Sichuan Basin, humid air gets trapped and forms persistent cloud and fog, making Chengdu one of the least sunny major cities in China.
The wettest period is summer, from June to August, usually as afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms with high humidity.
Winter temperatures are not extreme, around 3–10°C, but high humidity and frequent fog make it feel raw. Snow that settles in the city is very rare.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most pleasant, with less rain, mild temperatures and clearer skies than the grey winter.
