Qingdao's Climate

Qingdao is a port city on the Yellow Sea in Shandong province, northeastern China, with a temperate monsoon climate strongly moderated by the ocean. Thanks to that maritime influence, summers (June–August) are warm and humid but milder than inland, usually 25–29°C and often shrouded in sea fog, while winters (December–February) are cold, dry and windy, hovering around 0–5°C yet rarely as harsh as cities further north. Spring arrives late and brings thick fog, whereas autumn (September–November) is dry, crisp and cool, the finest time of year. Rain falls mostly in summer.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Qingdao?

Autumn, from September to November, is best: dry, gently sunny, cool and fog-free, ideal for the seafront and old European quarters.

Is Qingdao as hot as other Chinese cities?

No, the sea keeps its summers mild; even in the hottest month, August, highs are usually only 27–29°C and rarely top 33°C.

Why is Qingdao so prone to sea fog?

In late spring and early summer (April–July), humid air over a still-cool sea generates dense fog, common along the coast and harbour.

When is Qingdao's rainy period?

Rain concentrates in July and August, when the summer monsoon brings showers and thunderstorms; the rest of the year stays fairly dry.
