Marrakesh's Climate

Marrakesh lies inland in central Morocco at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, around 460m above sea level, with a hot semi-arid climate (Köppen BSh) on the edge of the desert. Summers (June–September) are intensely hot and dry, with daytime highs of 35–40°C and occasional spikes above 45°C when the chergui wind blows in from the Sahara, while winters (December–February) are mild, pleasant at 18–20°C by day but dropping to 5–8°C at night. Rainfall is scant, concentrated in late autumn and winter, with summers nearly bone-dry. Spring and autumn are the gentlest times of year.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Marrakesh?

Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) are best: warm, dry days around 22–28°C, ideal for exploring the medina and gardens without the summer heat.

What are the hottest months in Marrakesh?

July and August are hottest, with daytime highs usually 37–40°C and readings above 45°C possible when the hot chergui wind blows in from the Sahara.

Does it rain much in Marrakesh and when?

Marrakesh is very dry, receiving only about 250mm of rain a year, mostly between November and March, while summers are almost completely rainless.

Are Marrakesh nights cold in winter?

Yes, although days are mild, winter nights from December to February can fall to 5–8°C because the dry desert climate lets temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
