Tirunelveli's Climate

Tirunelveli lies in the far south of Tamil Nadu in southern India, on a dry plain beside the Thamirabarani River at the foot of the Western Ghats, giving it a hot, semi-arid tropical climate. It is warm year-round, with the hot season (March–June) scorching and dry, temperatures typically 34–39°C and sometimes above 40°C; sheltered in the rain shadow, the area gets little from the mid-year southwest monsoon and receives most of its rain from the northeast monsoon (October–December). Winter (December–February) is milder, dry and the most comfortable stretch. Hot, dry winds funnelling through the Ghats passes are a local signature.
