Arequipa's Climate

Arequipa lies in southern Peru at about 2,300 m among the volcanoes of the Andes, on the fringe of the Atacama desert. Thanks to its high, dry setting, it has a cool high-altitude desert climate with near-constant sunshine, earning its nickname the sunlit "White City." Days are mild and pleasant, usually 20–23°C, while nights turn cold, sometimes dropping below 5°C, especially during the dry winter (May–September). Rain is scarce and confined to the southern-hemisphere summer, from December to March, in brief showers. UV levels are very high because of the altitude.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Arequipa?

May to September is best: dry, sunny and mild by day; nights are cold, but conditions are ideal for sightseeing.

Is Arequipa hot, and when is it warmest?

Arequipa stays mild year-round thanks to its altitude; the warmest days reach about 22–24°C, usually in late spring and the southern summer.

Why are nights in Arequipa so cold?

At around 2,300 m with dry air, heat escapes quickly after sunset, and winter nights can fall below 5°C.

Does Arequipa have a rainy season, and how strong is the UV?

Rain is minimal, mostly December to March; UV is consistently very high due to the altitude, so sun protection is essential.
