Lima Climate

Lima is one of the world's driest capitals, with a cool coastal desert climate (BWn) tempered by the cold Humboldt Current offshore. Real rain almost never falls, yet humidity stays very high; in winter (June–September) the city sits under a dense grey fog known as the garúa, with damp, overcast conditions around 14–19°C. Summers (December–March) are warmer and brighter, typically 23–28°C as the cloud layer thins.

Frequently asked questions

Does it rain much in Lima?

Almost never. Lima sits in a desert and receives just a few millimetres of rain a year; instead of rain, the city gets damp fog and a faint drizzle locals call garúa.

When does Lima's garúa fog appear?

The garúa is thickest in winter, from June to September, blanketing the sky in grey for weeks with near-saturated humidity and very little sunshine.

When is Lima sunniest?

Summer, from December to March, is the sunniest and warmest period, when the cloud breaks up and temperatures reach 23–28°C, perfect for the beach and walking the city.

Is Lima hot?

No. Thanks to the cold Humboldt Current, Lima rarely gets truly hot; even in summer it stays around 28°C, while winters are cool and humid.
