Lviv lies in western Ukraine near the foothills of the Carpathians and far from the sea, giving it a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons and fairly even rainfall. Summers (June–August) are warm at 20–25°C with frequent afternoon showers and thunderstorms, while winters (December–February) are cold, hovering around -2 to -6°C with snow and frost. Spring is cool as the trees leaf out, and autumn (September–November) is mild and often cloudy. Its higher, hilly terrain keeps Lviv cooler and damper than much of lowland Ukraine.
