Set on the Highveld plateau at about 1,750m, Johannesburg has a mild subtropical highland climate with Southern Hemisphere seasons. Summers (October–April) are warm at 22–28°C by day and marked by afternoon thunderstorms that deliver most of the year's rain. Winters (May–August) are dry, sunny and pleasant during the day at around 16–18°C, but nights turn cold, sometimes dipping below 0°C with frost, although snow is extremely rare.

The shoulder months of September–October and March–April are very pleasant, with warm days and less rain than peak summer, ideal for outdoor sightseeing.
