Pretoria's Climate
Pretoria sits in Gauteng, northeastern South Africa, on the Highveld plateau at around 1,300 m, giving it a humid subtropical climate with summer rainfall. As it lies in the southern hemisphere the seasons are reversed: summer (November–March) is warm and humid, reaching 28–32°C by day with frequent afternoon showers and thunderstorms, while winter (June–August) is dry and sunny, pleasant at 18–21°C by day but chilly at night, occasionally near 0°C. Thanks to its altitude and inland position the city stays milder than many places at the same latitude and rarely feels oppressive. Spring brings sheets of purple jacaranda blossom.
