Kano lies in the savanna of northern Nigeria, deep inland near the southern edge of the Sahara, and has a tropical semi-arid climate with two sharply defined seasons. The rainy season (May–September) is hot and humid with heavy showers and thunderstorms driven by the southwest monsoon, peaking in August. The dry season (October–April) is long, sunny and very arid; from November to February the dry, cool, dust-laden harmattan blows off the Sahara and cuts visibility, while March to May is the hottest stretch, often topping 38–40°C. Day-to-night temperature swings are large.
