Qom sits in central Iran on the edge of the arid plateau near the Dasht-e Kavir salt desert, at around 930 metres, giving it a cold desert climate with large day-to-night temperature swings. Summers (June–September) are hot and very dry, with daytime highs usually 36–42°C and very low humidity, while winters (December–February) are cold at 0–10°C, with sub-freezing nights and the occasional light snowfall. The scant rainfall concentrates in late winter and spring, and most of the year stays clear and sunny. Dry winds and occasional dust storms drift in from the surrounding desert.
