Baghdad's Climate

Baghdad lies on the banks of the Tigris River in the inland Mesopotamian plain of Iraq, far from any sea. It has a hot desert climate (Koppen BWh), arid with a wide swing in temperature between seasons. Summers (June–September) are extremely hot and dry, with daytime highs usually of 42–48°C, almost no rain, fierce sunshine and frequent dust and sand storms. Winters (December–February) are mild, typically 12–18°C by day and dropping to 4–7°C at night, and this is the brief window when showers occur. Spring and autumn are short, fast-changing and pleasant transitional seasons.
